Working From Home Was Inevitable

Over the course of the pandemic lockdown working from home has become more widely available and very popular. However, we’re now reading plenty of accounts of broken work from home promises from numerous companies. However, I believe that working from home was going to be the future for most jobs regardless of a global pandemic. Today I’m going to give you my top 2reasons why working from home was and still is inevitable.

There was already an Increase in remote jobs

The first reason is quite simply this, there were already a growing number of work from home opportunities before COVID (at least in tech). I’ve written before about how I started working from home about a year or so before the first lockdowns in the US. At the time I received a TON of information about other work from home opportunities. Take this with a grain of salt since I’m really only detailing my observations over the years. However, I think the tech industry has been slowly adopting remote workers and was the first industry to offer a wide range of remote jobs. It’s been a trend that once the tech industry starts doing things eventually other industries will begin to follow along.

The internet is a thing

Ok, so we all know the internet and what kinds of things you can do on it. The internet has evolved to pretty much dominate our lives. Do you remember how to get places before Google Maps? Most companies have adopted parts of the internet for various functions of their operations which means that increasingly people are doing work in an office that primarily revolves around just being on the internet.

Communication has also evolved to be primarily done through the internet. In many modern offices, they have already been using things like Teams, Slack, Google Hangouts, or just plain email. We have been laying the groundwork to support fully remote jobs for the last 20 years and it’s finally coming into its infancy. If you think about it, the only shift we’ve really made is where workers are located now. Instead of walking to a conference room, you join a Zoom room. Instead of walking to a co-worker’s cubicle/office, you send them a message on your companies preferred communication medium.

Wrapping it up

Listen, if you’re one of those unlucky folks that was made a false promise of being able to continue to work from home I hope this will bring you some kind of peace of mind. Remote work is completely inevitable just like the internet. Some companies will fight it but for them, it’s an uphill battle that they will surely lose. I know that doesn’t help you out now, but I think in the next 2–5 years companies will have no choice but to offer a larger number of work from home opportunities.
